20.

Dagger already had the gear ready by the time they landed. Boggs escorted Dr. Tara up into the CAV-121, then met Dagger at the base of the ramp.

Boggs pulled out a laser bending device known as “Little Beaver”, and pushed the button while aiming it at the northwest corner of the fence. A second later, four layers of laser fencing contorted, forming a man-sized hole. Dagger quickly snuck through, and Boggs followed. As soon as he did, his COMM device beeped. Before answering, Boggs closed the fresh hole.

Then he put the COMM in silent mode. The spitters seemed to have excellent hearing.

“Staunch here.”

“Go ahead, Staunch.”

“We haven’t found a damn thing yet,” Staunch said quietly as weird bird song cried out on the COMM device. Wherever Staunch and Portman had gone, it sounded like they were deep in the wilderness.

Then again, the entire planet was deep wilderness.

“Nothing, no sign, no trace?”

“No sir,” Staunch said. “We’ve covered all four sides of the fence, spread out in two hundred yard sections, each side.”

“Odd,” Boggs said. “Let’s push out to four hundred yards, forming perimeters. We’ll stay in two groups to cover more ground.”

“Roger that,” Staunch said. “Do you have the Havoc 12?”

“Yes,” Boggs said. He wondered for a moment about firing the Havoc so close to the CAVs, and Base Camp 1. And he wondered about that tiny, but glaring failure percentage admitted by CPB weapons engineers.

“Let’s just hope we don’t have to use it,” Boggs said.

Boggs and Dagger walked carefully through the old growth rainforest. Every sound, every twitch of branch spiked adrenaline through him. He thought he heard spitters growling and hissing just out of sight, and checked his LifeForm device just to be sure.

All good.

For now.

The only things showing on the device were small weasel-like creatures, and a variety of bird species, all deemed “neutral”.

Still, Boggs didn’t like it.

He reached into his pack and unfolded a portable drone, then flung it into the air.

“Nice,” Dagger said.

A moment later the LifeForm beeped, revealing that it had established connection with the drone. No scan needed. The biologists had made welcome modifications.

Boggs crouched in the dark forest, watching the drone as it hovered below the vast canopy. Mawholla’s lone moon cast an eerie glow against tree trunks that simply had to be seen to be believed.

Boggs checked his LifeForm meter. The drone picked up squirrel animals as they scurried away from it, and a couple owl-like species.

“Come on,” Boggs said.

The two men stalked a hundred yards into the wilderness. Boggs’ COMM device vibrated in his pocket, and he held the device to his ear.

“Staunch here,” the voice said.

“Go ahead,” Boggs said.

“Nothing except small neutral animals,” Staunch said. “And no Dr. Reynolds. Not even a trace of blood, or a shoe, or anything.”

“Same over here,” Boggs said. He paused for a moment, thinking of his next plan. It was pretty simple. “Let’s push out another two hundred yards,” he said. “I’m not giving up yet.”

“Roger that,” Staunch said.

Boggs carefully clicked off the COMM device, and checked the LifeForm meter.
